Cookies
Cookies are small text files that the website can place on your computer or other smart devices when the UMFÍ website is visited. Cookies allow websites to recognise users’ computers, so a cookie is a kind of digital marker that remembers where you have been online.
A distinction is made between session cookies and persistent cookies. Session cookies allow the website to connect to a user’s actions while they are on the website. Session cookies are generally deleted when the user leaves the website and are therefore not stored for long. Persistent cookies are stored on the user’s computer and thus remember users’ choices or actions on the website. UMFÍ uses both session cookies and persistent cookies.
Cookies are also either first-party cookies or third-party cookies. The domain of the website that creates the cookie determines whether it counts as a first-party or third-party cookie. First-party cookies are basically cookies created on the website the user visits. Third-party cookies are cookies created on a domain other than the one the user visits.
Further information about cookies can be found on the following website: www.allaboutcookies.org.
Cookies used by UMFÍ on its website
UMFÍ uses several types of cookies on its website, www.umfi.is, and the cookies are used for the following purposes:
- Necessary cookies: Necessary cookies enable features on the website that must be in place for it to be used as intended.
- Statistics cookies: Statistics cookies are used in operating the website and contain statistical information on how often the website is visited and other web analytics, without personal identification.
- Marketing cookies: Marketing cookies are used to track visits to the website and to follow users’ search habits and search activity.
The personal data collected through the cookies include, among other things, information about IP address, location, actions on the website and the user’s device.
UMFÍ uses, among others, cookies from Google Analytics, Mapbox, Youtube and Siteimprove, and through those cookies Google, Mapbox, Youtube and Siteimprove have access to the information the cookies collect, including users’ IP addresses. These parties may thus act as processors on behalf of UMFÍ within the meaning of data protection law.
The UMFÍ website also has third-party cookies.
How can cookies be turned off?
The processing of personal data collected through necessary cookies is based on UMFÍ’s legitimate interests, as those cookies enable features that must be in place for the website to be used as intended.
The processing of personal data collected through the use of other cookies, however, is based on users’ consent. When a person visits the website for the first time, a banner appears asking them to accept the cookies UMFÍ uses.
Users can withdraw this consent at any time by blocking cookies on the website or deleting them from their browser. This may, however, limit the functionality of the site to some extent.

Cookie retention period
Most of the cookies UMFÍ uses are session cookies, which are deleted when the user leaves the website. Other cookies may be kept for up to 2 years.

UMFÍ may from time to time change this policy in line with changes to applicable law or changes in how the organisation uses cookies.
