Gunnar Þór was elected to the UMFÍ deputy board in 2017 and has sat on the main board since 2019 as a board member. He comes from the area of Ungmennasamband Skagafjarðar (UMSS), where he was born and raised. After nine years as chair of the main board of Tindastóll and vice-chair of UMSS, Gunnar was elected chair of UMSS in November 2020. Gunnar Þór was vice-chair of UMFÍ in 2023–2025.
