From a young age, Helgi has been a member of the youth association movement, first in Umf. Hrunamanna, then Umf. Laugdæla and in Umf. Selfoss.

He has been involved in many areas of youth and sports club work over the past decades, most notably:

• Icelandic Athletics Federation: Chair 1993–1997. Deputy board 2016–2018.
• Athletics department of UMF Selfoss: Chair 1998–2022.
• Héraðssambandið Skarphéðinn: Board secretary 2015–2016. Vice-chair since 2016.
• Ungmennafélag Selfoss: Chair since 2022.
• In addition, he has been active in local politics and was on the town council of the municipality of Árborg in 2010–2022, including as president of the town council in the 2018–2022 term.
